What’s on Your Wish List? Christmas Celebration with a Difference

What’s on Your Wish List? Christmas with a Difference!

Every Christmas, most Christians around the world put up Christmas trees in their homes, outside their houses, in their churches and other places.  They decorate these special trees with shiny gold and silver ornaments. Gifts boxes are put under them – with or without presents in them.

Come Christmas, almost everyone who celebrates it wants to have some kind of special present from loved ones – friends and family members. People like to exchange gifts during the Yuletide. I did enjoy this euphoria so much when I was a child. I always looked forward to receiving new clothes, presents and Christmas cards from family members and friends alike. It definitely is the time of the year that all kids yearn to see and experience. Oh. And not forgetting the beautiful carols that are sung by beautiful people on this festive season.

Besides enjoying Christmas celebrations at home, some Christians who are able, travel to the nativity town in Bethlehem, to see for themselves where Christ was born. They don’t mind spending that much money to have this adventure.

Now, let’s pause for a moment…. I would like to ask … have you ever, really, thought about the meaning of Christmas and the reason why you celebrate it? Or do you just celebrate it because others do? Have you ever asked yourself – why do I join in this blithesome season of joy and well-wishing fest? I believe it is time we ask ourselves these important questions.

Wish Lists

As Christmas celebrants, we often come up with long list of things we wish to have or get from others. Some like to receive clothes, shoes and so on.

What is on your list? How many items do you have on your list? When I was a kid, I always had many things on my wish list – toys, clothes, shoes, candies, etc. Sometimes if you are lucky enough, you can get all the things you listed on your wish list. Other times you may not get all that you wished for. However, there will be no time that you will not get anything at all! That will be a total disaster. It can happen but very rarely.

At the end of the day, you sit down and count all the blessings that you received on Christmas. Smiles of joy are seen all over your face. You can’t be happier than that! During this moment of euphoria, you become immune to anger. Even If someone stepped on your foot, you  might not feel it, let alone getting mad at the person. It’s really a time of joy and gladness. It’s a season that brings cheer to most people.

Christmas is celebrated not only by Christians, but by non Christians as well. Modern Christmas celebrations have been turned into multi-billion dollar business ever since “Santa Claus” was attached to it.  Santa Claus has nothing to do with Christmas and yet the mythical Santa is more famous than the one whose birth is being celebrated.

  • What is Christmas?

People observe Christmas festivities in many places around the world. But do we really know what Christmas is all about?

According to Wikipedia, Christmas or Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning “Christ‘s Mass“) is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Christ, observed most commonly on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.  A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is prepared for by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night.

Now we know what Christmas is. It is about the birth of Christ which was prophesied in the Bible that He will come into this world and bring joy to all human kind.

At His birth, the Bible says the heavenly angels sang a beautiful song saying:  “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14 (NKJV)

This is why we should celebrate Christmas.  Actually, I would like to suggest that during this time, all hostilities should end. Let everyone stop for a while and think, as rational beings that can make better decisions. And let’s ask ourselves … why are we fighting each other and what are we fighting for? Why can’t we live together in peace? Let’s ask ourselves … what can we do to bring to an end all this madness of killing one another and destroying this Earth which we call our home?

What Can I Give Him?

Now that we know why we celebrate Christmas, let’s take a deep breath and ask ourselves – individually … What Can I Give Him? What can I give to the One whose birth brought joy to the whole world? There are a lot of things that we can give back to Him. Actually, He doesn’t need anything from us because everything belongs to Him as the Bible tells us that Jesus is the creator and owner of this universe and everything in it. Jesus Himself says in Revelation 1:8: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”(NKJV) Everything belongs to Him, therefore He does not need our help. The only thing we can do to show our appreciation for all that He has done for us is to help our fellow human beings.

So, what can we give Him – He who does not need anything from us human beings? Well, we cannot give any material things to Jesus; however, we can give Him our hearts. That is the only thing we can really do for Him.

When Christ resides in our hearts, our Christmas wish lists will then changed to “Give lists.” This means that, during Christmas, we will not wish that Santa will give us anything on our wish lists for being good boys and girls, but rather, we will list down the things that we can give back to Him whose birth we honor and cherish in our hearts.

Our “to Give lists” may include:
  1. Helping the poor and the needed
  2. Showing acts of kindness to people around us
  3. Assisting people with physical disabilities
  4. Allowing our fellow drivers to go ahead of us without getting enraged
  5. Sharing our things that are sharable with others
  6. Picking up trash from sidewalks
  7. Donating blood that can help save lives
  8. Being peace brokers
  9. Making changes in our lives that will make us better people
  10. Visiting orphanages and nursing homes
  11. Volunteering at Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) to share our skills
  12. Giving away used clothes or excess clothes to the needy
  13. Rushing to the aid of people who are in trouble
  14. Standing for what is right
  15. Taking good care of ourselves and be happy with our lives

This is just a few of the things we can offer to show that we really understand what Christmas is all about. The list can go on and on. You may add as many as you want, but the most important thing is to execute those things on the list – put them into practice!

There is no other way of giving back to Jesus than to lend a helping hand to others. Jesus Himself says in Matthew 25:40 –“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (NKJV)

As we celebrate this momentous season of the year, let us focus more on what we can give to others and not what we can receive from others!

A Moral and Ethical Question

Published by:

You were driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night.
You pass by a bus stop, and see three people waiting for the bus.
  1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
  2. An old friend who once saved your live.
  3. The perfect woman you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading.
This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.

You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die and thus you should save her first, or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life and this will be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams.”

The moral lesson: “Never forget to ‘Think Outside the Box’.”

This is just food for thought. Have a good day!

Happiness Quote 2Have you ever had the experience of not getting what you really wish for? Have you failed in moving forward with your projects because things seem not to be going your way? Well, take heart! Don’t give up! Don’t quit for any reason. Stand your ground and go through the turbulence that life offers sometimes, because without those hard times, you may take life for granted.
Sometimes I’m amazed to watch tiny ants carrying objects several times bigger than themselves. I look, and I see a tiny ant carrying a Goliath size of food which it wants to store for future use. It will carry it up hill. When it thinks it has reached its destination, this tiny insect will tumble down, together with the dinner it has found. The interesting thing is that this creature never gives up. It gets hold of it again and tries one more time. Down it comes, with its over-sized load, and yet, it will continue to try in different ways until it finally succeeds!
Watching ants at work can give you tons of encouragement. These little creatures amaze me always! I have learned a lot of things from these little friends called ANTS:
1. They work both as individuals and as groups: – ants can work independently or as a group. They take on tasks that seem very laborious for such tiny creatures. They know when to call for assistance from their mates. When it is time to call for help, they don’t hesitate.

2. They never give up: – with their size, you may be tempted to overlook the enormous feat that ants can attain. How do they accomplish all those heavy-duty tasks? They meet them through persistent efforts. If they fail, they will find another way to do it all over again, and they will not stop until they succeed!
3. They are hard-working: – ants work very hard in whatever task they undertake. They work tirelessly in carrying things across all sorts of terrain. There is no obstacle that can stop them from doing the job they set their eyes on.
4. They prepare for the future: – ants are a few species of living things (aside from human beings) that make better preparations for the unforeseeable future. They don’t take chances. I wonder how they know when it is time to prepare for the next season, while some people do not even know what to do for their own lives! They have very tiny brains and yet ants are able to plan out where and how to find their food for the days, weeks and months ahead. Incredible creatures!
5. They work against the odds: – I think ants are immune to obstacles that stand in the way when it comes to taking on mammoth tasks. Sometimes you may see ants carrying objects on a fast-flowing streams and rivers. They are swept away by these fast currents and yet, they will continue to work against the currents until they reach their destination with their out-of-proportion loads of burden. Strong winds may blow them away from their targets; however, they go right back to take on the task at hand and start all over again.

6. They dare to take on tasks that are way too much for their stature: – do you sometimes stop to ponder on how ants take on such heavy-duty tasks? Sometimes I wonder how so small a creature dares to tackle undaunted stints. It is like a mouse trying to pull an over-sized sleeping bulldog! Sometimes some people lose all hope at the mere sight of the task to be attempted. You may feel intimidated by just looking at what you are supposed to do. We all experience situations like that at one point of our daily lives. Sometimes when I go for a walk at a park and I look at the size of the park, it gives me shivers in my bones, at the fact I am going walk around this huge park. In this situation, the most important thing is to get started. Once I get started, I don’t look back. I make sure that I accomplish the task. Ants are like that. They take tantalizing duties upon themselves and finish them with positive results.
7. They get things done: – you may have the desires and all the energies needed to take on various tasks, however, if you don’t get things done at the end of the day, there is nothing to celebrate for! You may have all the impetus to start a noble cause, in spite of that, if you do not achieve your goal in the end, you can never say you have succeeded. Like the ants, when you get things started, you should get things done, so that you can proudly say, this is what I have done! A dream comes true!

Ants at Work 3
8. They have the best teamwork mechanism: – ants will quickly team up to make bridges to ferry their cargo across a broken link along their path. They can also take turns in leading the hunt. The stronger ones will start the haul and when they get tired, new ones with fresh energy will take charge. They do not argue about who should get dirty first, they just give a helping hand as the situation calls for it.

9. They are good improvisers: – ants will stop at nothing to do their tasks. When they come to dead-ends, they quickly improvise and find a way out of every untenable situation that pops up to thwart their efforts. This is a characteristic of highly successful people. Like the famous violinist, Paganini, who could play even better with only one violin string at his disposal, so are the MIGHTY tiny ants.Nothing can practically, stop ants from setting goals and accomplishing them, even if all odds are against them.
If these tiny creatures can plan, set out and do tasks set before them and attain positive results, so can you! You can do much more than the ants!
So, Wake up! Stay up, and DON’T give up! FINISH UP, and enjoy the rewards of your hard work!

A Week To Remember This Life I Live

At the end of the day, there is always something to reflect upon. You may think again, about the opportunities that came your way and you missed! Teachers will reflect on the classes that were made unteachable by some naughty students. In the same way, students will reminisce on the topics they couldn’t comprehend (what all those scientific terminologies were about). Sales persons will ponder on their prospective customers who were about to make purchases but for one reason or another, didn’t.

The list can go on and on, but for me, whatever happened in the past is gone and gone forever!  We may never be able to retrieve those missed opportunities. However, don’t lose hope! Don’t be downcast for those lost precious moments! As the saying goes, “Tomorrow is another day.” Come tomorrow, you will have another chance to make amends for what you have missed.

So as the hectic working week comes to a close (Thank God it’s Friday), just spend a little time to look back and take note of those things  which you were supposed to carry out but couldn’t. Then make a better preparation so you can meet your expected goals and aspirations next time. And to To  those who experienced positive outcomes in the past week, I will say congratulations, for your successes in whatever you excelled in. Keep it up and work harder to make more successes!

May your weekend restore your health to the topmost gear, so you can do better in the new working week that will soon come. Have an amazing Weekend!

This post is dedicated to those who believe in a Divine power other than human power, controlling the universe. Some people believe in God; some believe Buddha and others believe in something else.
Whoever or whatever you believe in, here is a place where we all can meditate on words that inspire and encourage us to move on with our lives even though life gets tough and sometimes we don’t know what to do. When all seem lost and don’t know what to do, look unto the higher power that can propel us forward to endure whatever difficulties that come our way, and march on to victory!
Welcome to the inspirational world!
